| With the aim of determinig of olive cultivars that exist in Turkey, a detailed inventory work has been done in 5 different regions (Black Sea, Marmara, Aegean, Mediterrenean and South-Eastern Anatolia).
Subsequently, a national olive collection has been established with 88 selected olive cultivars. In this orchard; pomological, morphological and agronomical characteristics of the cultivars have been examined; yield per tree has been determined as from the beginning of the first productive year; and sensivity and resistency situations of the cultivars to the different stress conditions (cold, drought, pest and diseases) have been observed.
On the basis of the data obtained, characterization of the cultivars has been made and an olive cataloque has been prepared for 28 domestic olive cultivars which are suitable for different uses such as table olive, oil olives and dual purposes.
Besides, the scions from the important olive cultivars of Spain, Italy, France, Tunisia and Syria have been introduced and grafted onto the rootstocks. A “foreign cultivar collection” has been set up with these grafted material. The collection consists of 28 cultivars having different origins.
All the studies, determinations, observations and evaluations made in domestic cultivars have also been realized in the foreign ones and their characteristics have been determined.
These cultivars in both collections will be an important gene source for the coming studies such as adaptation, cross breeding and establishment of rootstock orchards. |
