Proje adı : RESEARCH ON GROWTH OF OLIVE SAPLINGS IN DIFFERENT MEDIA (1999)
Hazırlayanlar : Nejat ÖZİLBEY Özgül CANÖZER Oğuz DAĞ
It is desired olive sapling to be healthy and qualified . At present time, olive saplings are produced and sold as potted plants. The studies proved that such saplings have higher capacity in growth and starting fruit-set. A medium in which saplings grow ,are wanted to be good aerated, to have sufficient amount of water holding capacity and required nutrients for plant growth and to be free patogens and weed seeds. In production of olive saplings,a mixture consisting of soil and farmyard manure is generally used as growing medium. As a result, expected growth can not be provided on saplings. Recently ,peat and perlite have been started to be used within growing media in nurseries. Those materials supply necessery water and nutrients for plant growth as well as good aeration around roots. Both materials have no patogens and weed because they are sterile. In this study ,which was made to determine the most suitable medium in olive sapling production, the best results were obtained with the media having peat and perlite among 8 different mixtures prepared with the materials such as soil, farmyard manure, torf and perlite by mixing them at different rates. *In growing media where peat was mixed with other materials at the same rate or at a higher rate saplings were longer and stem growth was improved. *Weed growth in pots was less in the media having peat only and the media consisting of peat ,perlite and sand. *The rates of survived cuttings rooted in greenhouse were determined during their transfer firstly into small pots and later into big pots for marketing. The rate of survival was found to be higher on saplings in the media having peat at high rates. *The length of roots was also higher on saplings in the same media. In conclusion,by means of adding peat into growing medium sapling quality is improved and more healthy saplings are obtained.
